Extremophilic microbes: Diversity and perspectives
نویسندگان
چکیده
A variety of microbes inhabit extreme environments. Extreme is a relative term, which is viewed compared to what is normal for human beings. Extreme environments include high temperature, pH, pressure, salt concentration, and low temperature, pH, nutrient concentration and water availability, and also conditions having high levels of radiation, harmful heavy metals and toxic compounds (organic solvents). Culture-dependent and culture-independent (molecular) methods have been employed for understanding the diversity of microbes in these environments. Extensive global research efforts have revealed the novel diversity of extremophilic microbes. These organisms have evolved several structural and chemical adaptations, which allow them to survive and grow in extreme environments. The enzymes of these microbes, which function in extreme environments (extremozymes), have several biotechnological applications. Antibiotics, compatible solutes and other compounds obtainable from these microbes are also finding a variety of uses.

متن کاملPotential of Extremophiles for Biotechnological and Petroleum Applications
The ability of microorganisms to survive under harsh conditions has recently prompted researchers to study these microbes to better understand their characteristics and eventually utilize them in various applications. Extremophilic microorganisms withstand one or more extreme condition constraints due to cold, heat, high acidity, high alkalinity, high salinity, and high pressure levels. These c...
متن کاملRediscovery of the Microbial World in Microbial Ecology
Recent progress in microbial ecology is allowing for the new discovery of the vast, poorly-characterized microbial world. The following four topics are intensively highlighted as perspectives we can use to look into the novel microbial world in nature; unexplored habitats, unexpected microbial diversity/function, microbial community including eukaryotic microbes, and complex microbial ecosystem...
متن کاملMarine microbial diversity and ecology: importance and future perspectives
The world ocean with a coastline of 312,000 km (193,000 miles) and a volume of 137 × 10 km, is the largest ecosystem on earth, and has been used for a variety of purposes by man for millennia. Because of its large volume and vast area, influence of the world ocean on world climate is profound. Microorganisms occur nearly everywhere in nature and occupy an important place in human view of life. ...

Soda lake is hyper alkaline and saline habitat located in closed craters with high evaporation rate. In current study fungal diversity from water and sediment samples of a soda lake (Lonar lake) located in Buldhana district of Maharashtra, India was investigated using extensive culturomics approach and mimicking the natural conditions of Lonar lake in culture media. A total of 104 diverse isola...
